Gentherm’s mission is to create and deliver extraordinary thermal solutions that make meaningful differences in everyday life by improving health, wellness, comfort, and energy efficiency. Gentherm has offices in 23 locations worldwide and has an exceptionally strong position in the global market.

Background

The need for a coherent software development environment appeared when one of Gentherm’s employees created a system that met the main expectations but required improvements to work properly. During the whole process, there were technical barriers. Gentherm decided to provide its teams with a modern environment in which they could carry out further development projects following the latest standards without downtime. The client was looking for a scalable solution adjusted to company needs.

Challenges and needs

The main challenge was to order the entire development process from scratch and provide an advanced environment that could be used immediately after implementation. That’s why our cooperation started with gathering requirements, analysis, detailed consultations, establishing main needs, and other guidelines which the environment must meet. The next step was to deliver highly justified and explained recommendations of specific solutions that the platform should consist of and also that the entire infrastructure should be hosted in the Amazon Web Services. Thanks to this, the customer can be sure of high data security, pay only for the used resources, and gain the possibility to adjust the amount of used space to the size of the instance.  After that part, we did a series of training sessions for Gentherm’s teams, which we broke down into individual parts:

• Training for Jira users,
• Git developer training,
• Bitbucket developer training,
• Visual Studio training,
• Development process workshop,
• Jenkins developer training.

At the same time, we started the implementation process. Now, when everything works properly, we are still taking care of the entire system as part of our maintenance services. We respond to the reported problems and make additional improvements if necessary.

The scope of implementation affected over two thousand end-users at production sites, and the whole work took several months.

The client has gained an advanced environment built according to best practices and the necessary knowledge to use it effectively. Gentherm’s teams are also using Jira Service Management to handle requests related to their applications. This way, they can comprehensively deal with creating new and improving existing systems that they implement on their clients’ production lines. The solution has been implemented in factories in Ukraine and North Macedonia.
